Private Lavaux wine tour — by Mercedes chauffeur-guide.
30 kilometres of UNESCO-listed terraced vineyards rising 500 metres above Lake Geneva. Six villages connected by stone-walled paths laid down by Cistercian monks in the 11th century. A single grape — Chasselas — coaxed into seven AOC terroirs by what locals call “the three suns”. We drive you there in a Mercedes, stop where you want, reserve the cellar visits in advance, and bring you back without you ever consulting a map.

Unlike any wine region in Europe
Lavaux is not a vineyard region. It is a 1 000-year landscape sculpture, hand-built by monks, recognised by UNESCO, and producing exactly one grape — Chasselas — that nobody else in the world has perfected.

Chasselas — and what your chauffeur will explain
Chasselas is the grape variety that 95% of Lavaux’s 800 hectares produce. It is a low-alcohol, mineral-forward white that expresses terroir like almost no other grape — which is why Lavaux’s seven AOC terroirs taste so differently from one another, despite being the same cépage.
Calamin AOC Grand Cru
16 hectares only — Europe’s smallest Grand Cru appellation. A single steep slope above Épesses. Rare tasting opportunity.
Dézaley AOC Grand Cru
54 hectares, founded by Cistercian monks in the 12th century. The most prestigious Lavaux terroir — deep mineral profile, ageing potential 10+ years.
Lavaux AOC (generic)
The base appellation covering most Lavaux production. Fresh, citrus, mineral — perfect aperitif wine, excellent with Lake Geneva perch.
Lieux-dits
Four additional named-place appellations: Villette, Saint-Saphorin, Chardonne, and Vevey-Montreux. Each expresses its own micro-terroir.
Aromatic profile
Dry, mineral, with light notes of flint and “pierre à fusil” (gunflint). Long finish. Best served at 9–11 °C in tulip glasses.
Food pairings
Lake Geneva perch (perches du Léman), raclette, fondue, malakoff (Vaud specialty), light cheese and cold cuts. Avoid heavy reds.
Where we take you for tastings

Specialised domaines focusing on the top terroirs. Tastings often include older vintages. CHF 40–80 per person.

Lavaux wine tour — frequently asked questions
What’s the difference between Lavaux and other Swiss wine regions?
Lavaux is the only Swiss wine region inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage list (since 2007). It is also the largest contiguous vineyard in Switzerland at 800 hectares, and the only region where Chasselas dominates 95% of production. The terraced landscape — built and maintained by hand over a millennium — and the “three suns” microclimate make Lavaux a unique terroir. Other Swiss regions (Valais, Vaud Côtes, Geneva, Neuchâtel, Ticino) produce excellent wines but lack the UNESCO recognition and the singular Chasselas identity that defines Lavaux.
Do I need to book wine tastings in advance?
Yes — most family-owned Lavaux cellars work by reservation, especially during vendanges and summer weekends. We handle this for you 48 hours in advance based on your style preference (Grand Cru focus, family domaine, Vinorama) and group size. Tasting fees (typically CHF 25–45 per person) are billed directly by the vigneron, separate from your tour quote.
What is Chasselas wine and why is Lavaux famous for it?
Chasselas is a white grape variety that has been cultivated in Lavaux since at least the 11th century. It is the dominant grape of the region (95% of production) and Switzerland’s signature variety. What makes Lavaux’s Chasselas unique is the steep terraced terroir, the “three suns” microclimate (direct sunlight + lake reflection + heat stored in the stone walls), and the seven AOC subzones — including Calamin Grand Cru (16 hectares, Europe’s smallest Grand Cru) and Dézaley Grand Cru (54 hectares, the most prestigious). The wine is dry, mineral, low in alcohol (around 11.5–12.5%), with flint notes and a long finish — ideal as an aperitif or with Lake Geneva perch.
How long does a Lavaux wine tour from Geneva take?
The drive from Geneva centre to Lutry (entry to Lavaux) is about 55 minutes (60 km). A half-day Lavaux tour totals 4 hours including travel; a full-day Grand Crus tour 7 hours; a sunset romantic evening 5 hours. Multi-day stays are also possible, combining Lavaux with Aigle vineyards, Gruyères cheese country, or Valais.
Can the chauffeur recommend wineries based on my preferences?
Yes — this is what makes our service different from a generic taxi. Our chauffeur-guides know the Lavaux vignerons personally and will recommend cellars based on whether you prefer crisp aperitif wines (younger Chasselas), structured Grand Crus (Calamin, Dézaley with 5+ years ageing), small family-only domaines (no commercial walk-ins), or larger curated experiences (Vinorama, Vinothèque). Tell us your style at booking and we coordinate.
Is a Lavaux wine tour suitable for non-drinkers or designated drivers?
Yes — because we provide the chauffeur, there is no designated driver problem. Non-drinkers in the group can enjoy the scenery, the cellar visits without tasting, and the lake views; some cellars also offer Chasselas grape juice or local non-alcoholic options. Children are welcome (free of charge for tasting fees) and we provide child seats on request.
What languages do your chauffeur-guides speak?
All our chauffeurs speak professional English and French as standard. Most also speak German and Italian. Hindi-speaking chauffeurs are available on advance request, particularly valued for Indian family groups. The cellar visits themselves are typically conducted by the vigneron in their own language — most speak English; we confirm language at the reservation stage.
Can we combine a Lavaux tour with lunch at a vineyard restaurant?
Yes — and we strongly recommend it. Auberge de l’Onde in Saint-Saphorin is legendary (perch fillets, Chasselas pairings, 14th-century building). Hôtel Lavaux in Cully offers refined lake-view dining. Restaurant du Port in Cully is more relaxed and authentic. We make the lunch reservation as part of your tour at no additional charge — only the restaurant bill is direct.
Are wine tastings included in the tour price?
No — wine tasting fees are billed directly by the vigneron (typically CHF 25–45 per person for 3–5 wines, sometimes more for older Grand Crus). The reasons: each cellar sets its own price, you may buy bottles, and direct payment maintains the relationship between you and the winemaker. Your SLS tour quote covers chauffeur, vehicle, fuel, tolls, reservations, and waiting time only.
What’s the best season to visit Lavaux?
May to October is the optimal window. May and June: vineyards are bright green, weather mild, fewer crowds. July and August: peak summer, lake swimming combined with wine, but higher prices and crowds. September and October: vendanges (harvest) — most authentic experience, golden vineyards, cellars in full activity. November to April: many cellars close or operate by appointment only; we still run tours but expect a quieter experience.
Can we customise the itinerary on the day?
Yes — that’s the point of a private chauffeur tour. Itineraries evolve. A planned afternoon at Vinorama can become a longer lunch at Auberge de l’Onde. A quick Chexbres viewpoint can extend into a Dézaley walk. Tell your chauffeur-guide as the day unfolds — there is no penalty for itinerary changes communicated in good time.
Do you offer multi-day wine tours combining Lavaux with Aigle or Valais?
Yes — multi-day Switzerland wine itineraries are some of our most-requested tours, especially from Indian and Middle Eastern UHNW travellers. A typical 3-day itinerary combines Lavaux (Day 1) + Aigle/Vaud Alpes (Day 2) + Valais (Day 3 — Pinot Noir country). 5-day variants extend to Neuchâtel or Ticino. Same chauffeur throughout for continuity. Multi-day discount of 5–10% applies. See our Indian travellers guide for more on multi-day itineraries.
