Andermatt has been quietly transformed into one of Switzerland’s most coveted alpine destinations over the past decade — driven by the Sawiris-backed Andermatt Swiss Alps resort development and the flagship Chedi hotel. From Geneva the drive is 280 km, three and a half hours via the A1, A2 and the Gotthard route. Our private Mercedes E-Class starts at CHF 1,100; the V-Class at CHF 1,300 suits families and small groups; the S-Class at CHF 1,500 is the standard for business travellers booking The Chedi. All prices fixed, all-inclusive, year-round.

Why we recommend a chauffeur over the alternatives

The train option to Andermatt — Genève → Zürich HB → Göschenen → Andermatt with two changes, finishing on the historic Matterhorn-Gotthard Bahn rack-railway — takes about 4h30 and works well for solo travellers. For couples and groups the timing and the luggage-handling between platforms shifts the balance toward private transfer. More significant: Andermatt’s transformation into a five-star destination has brought a clientele that expects S-Class arrival standards, and the Chedi’s covered driveway is designed for chauffeured delivery. The drive itself is one of Switzerland’s most beautiful highway segments, crossing the central plateau then climbing the Gotthard approach. Winter conditions can briefly close the Gotthard tunnel access; our drivers know the cantonal road alternative via the Susten or Furka passes when needed.

The route in detail

Three motorway stages and a final approach. Stage one: A1 east from Geneva — through Lausanne, Yverdon, Bern, Luzern. Around 220 km of clean motorway in about two and a quarter hours. Stage two: at Lucerne we transition onto the A2 southbound. The road runs along the eastern shore of Lake Lucerne with dramatic views of Mount Rigi and Mount Pilatus, then enters the Reuss valley climbing through Altdorf and Erstfeld. Around 50 km on this stretch. Stage three: at Göschenen we exit the A2 just before the Gotthard tunnel entrance and take the cantonal road eastward through the Schöllenen gorge — a five-minute drive past the famous Devil’s Bridge — climbing to Andermatt at 1,440 m. The final 15 km from Göschenen is the only mountain segment; in winter it occasionally requires chains, which we always carry. Total GVA → Andermatt: 3h30 in clear conditions, more in heavy snow.

Hotels we know in Andermatt

The town now combines historic Swiss inns with the resort development’s modern flagships. The Chedi Andermatt, the GHM-managed five-star and the catalyst for the resort’s transformation, has a covered porte-cochère that takes private chauffeurs directly — our drivers know to swing the V-Class wide left at the canopy and the bell desk meets the car. Hotel Drei Könige & Post on Gotthardstrasse is the historic 200-year-old coaching inn with cobbled forecourt; the S-Class fits, V-Class needs careful parking on the side. Radisson Blu Hotel Reussen, part of the resort’s modern wing, has its own underground driveway — we drop at the lobby level. River House Boutique Hotel, in the old village along the Reuss, has a small parking area at the entrance; we coordinate with reception by phone before arrival so the porter is on hand.

What to do in Andermatt

Andermatt sits at the geographic centre of Switzerland, where four valleys meet, and offers a remarkable diversity of activities across all seasons. Skiing: the SkiArena Andermatt-Sedrun-Disentis links Andermatt to Disentis on a single lift pass, covering 180 km of pistes including the legendary Gemsstock freeride glacier. The Nätschen-Gütsch sector offers family terrain. Golf: the 18-hole Andermatt Swiss Alps Golf Course is the highest 18-hole layout in Switzerland (1,447 m), designed by Kurt Rossknecht — open May to October. Spa: The Chedi’s spa is among the country’s finest, with thermal pools, hammam and a 35 m indoor pool. Open to non-residents on reservation. Cycling: the Gotthard, Furka, Susten and Oberalp passes converge at Andermatt — a road-cycling Mecca in summer. Heritage: the Suworow monument and the Devil’s Bridge in the Schöllenen gorge mark Russian general Suvorov’s 1799 Alpine crossing. Music: the Andermatt Music Festival runs concerts at the new Andermatt Konzerthalle (Studio Seilern Architects) from summer through Christmas. Cross-country skiing: 28 km of loipes between Andermatt and Realp. Hiking: the Maighelstal, Vermigeltal and Felliboden trails in summer; the four-pass tour (Gotthard, Furka, Oberalp, Susten) is the regional ultra. Train ride: the Glacier Express crosses Andermatt — a 7h45 panoramic journey toward St. Moritz or Zermatt.

The Andermatt Swiss Alps development: context

The Egyptian developer Samih Sawiris launched the Andermatt Swiss Alps project in 2009, when the historic Swiss Army garrison town faced steep population decline. Over fifteen years the project has delivered The Chedi (opened 2013), an 18-hole golf course, the Andermatt Konzerthalle (2019), the Radisson Blu Reussen, and dozens of new chalets — while preserving the historic village along Gotthardstrasse. The result is a remarkable mix: Suvorov-era military stone walls next to award-winning contemporary architecture, traditional Swiss inns alongside Michelin-starred hotel restaurants. For chauffeur clients this matters because the resort’s hotels expect — and accommodate — five-star arrival standards, while the village itself remains friendly, low-key and walkable.

Andermatt in summer: an often overlooked option

While the SkiArena drives winter bookings, Andermatt’s summer (mid-June to mid-October) is genuinely outstanding and quieter than the alpine resorts further west. The four-pass loop (Gotthard–Furka–Susten–Oberalp) is rideable in a single long day for fit cyclists, drivable in a relaxed day by car. The Maighelstal trail to Lai da Tuma — the source of the Rhine — is a five-hour return walk from the Oberalp pass with limestone scenery unique to the central Alps. The Devil’s Bridge in the Schöllenen and the Suvorov monument are open year-round and rewarding even for a 30-minute stop on a transfer day. Many of our summer Andermatt clients are road cyclists chasing the four passes, road-trip Swiss-resident families, or Glacier Express passengers boarding at the Andermatt station.

Equipment and seasons

The Gotthard route is open year-round; the cantonal road to Andermatt from Göschenen is reliably maintained. We run 3PMSF winter tyres October to April and carry chains for the upper section. Roof boxes free on request; the Sprinter holds all standard ski equipment internally. Child seats free of charge. The Andermatt route is also stunning in summer — the pass roads (Furka, Susten, Oberalp) open mid-June and create one of the great Alpine driving routes; for clients wanting a scenic transfer with stops, we add 60–90 minutes and quote on request. The road via the new Andermatt-Sedrun tunnel (2019) shortened the route between the resort and the Disentis ski area, useful for ski-day excursions.

FAQ

Is The Chedi the only luxury option in Andermatt?

It is the flagship five-star. The Radisson Blu Reussen and the new chalets in the resort development cover the upper-four-star end. For traditional Swiss character at four-star level, the Drei Könige & Post is the historic choice.

Can you arrange a same-day round trip from Geneva for a Chedi spa day?

Yes — a popular service. Departure GVA at 07:00 puts you at The Chedi for a 10:30 spa session; return pickup 17:00, back in Geneva by 20:30. Full-day round trip quoted from CHF 2,200 in S-Class.

Does the Gotthard tunnel close in winter?

Rarely, but it can. We route via Susten or Furka pass alternatives when needed (May–November only — both passes close in winter), or via the A13 over the San Bernardino in deep winter conditions.

Do you carry golf bags in summer?

Yes. The V-Class and S-Class boots hold two full golf bags comfortably; the Sprinter handles a foursome plus equipment without issue.

Can the trip be done in S-Class with three passengers and full ski equipment?

Tight. The S-Class boot fits two ski bags. For three passengers with skis we recommend the V-Class, which carries seven sets internally and remains far more comfortable.

Do you serve Sedrun and Disentis at the same rate?

Sedrun is 25 minutes east of Andermatt, accessible by the same valley road — CHF 1,200 in E-Class. Disentis is further (1h east) at CHF 1,350.

Is a stop at the Devil’s Bridge included?

The Schöllenen gorge with the Devil’s Bridge is on our route from Göschenen — a 5-minute photo stop is included on request and our chauffeurs know the safe pull-over point.

What about the Glacier Express — do you handle this combination?

Yes — chauffeur to Andermatt, board the Glacier Express east toward St. Moritz, return-chauffeur from St. Moritz to Geneva. Quoted as a multi-leg package.
